Swimming Lessons

Carlton Rotary is embedded in the local community and is committed to helping locals access services they might not otherwise have access to.

With the assistance of Drummond Street Services, each summer we seek out children who are new to Australia, who do not know how to swim and whose parents may not be in a financial position to provide swimming lessons.

Funding is provided to enable these children to attend intensive summer holiday swimming lessons at Carlton Baths as well as providing necessary equipment such as goggles. The children thrive in these new lessons, building confidence and also stay longer after their lessons to practice their new skills.

The families involved, Carlton Baths, and Drummond Street Services very much appreciate the opportunity Rotary provides each summer for the children to become safer in the water and to be able to enjoy the aquatic environment.

Carlton Rotary thanks Carlton Baths for providing places in their classes for this program, and Drummond Street Services for providing the families with the support to access the lessons.

Testimonial from Sara Nega, Family Support Officer Drummond Street Services after our program concluded for 2021:

“This project showed the importance of the involvement of an organisation like yours. We were able to identify six children who had never been to a swimming pool before aged between 5-13, two of which had only recently arrived from Sudan, these children would not have been able to access lessons otherwise due to financial hardship. The program was very successful as the children each had 8 swimming lessons and showed great improvement as well as really enjoying the experience. These lessons were important for the children’s social integration and a bright spot in their difficult lives. The parents of the children wish to thank Carlton Rotary most sincerely as it was a wonderful experience after so long in lockdown, they were happy to come even when it was raining.”

Tennis Lessons

We have also previously provided local children associated with Drummond Street Services with Tennis lessons.

Giving access to extra-curricular activities that these children may not normally be able to access enables them to better participate with their peers in school life.
