About

The Rotary Club of Carlton was chartered on 27th June 1985 and was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Melbourne. Over that time, the broader Carlton area has undergone significant change and it continues to do so. Over those years we have established very strong connections with most of the agencies that serve the city’s residents. It is a dynamic and diverse suburb that includes in its area the Exhibition Building, the Museum, the University of Melbourne precinct, Lygon St. and the high-rise flats.

More recent changes include significant growth in new medium and high density housing developments, including public housing estates and student accommodation. There has been a major increase in population generally and significant changes in its ethnic composition. The large number of overseas students has resulted in a rather high proportion of people from Asian countries now living in Carlton, as well as healthy numbers of immigrants from Africa – Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, and the early immigrants from Italy.

The Rotary Club of Carlton is very well connected into the community fabric of Carlton, through our membership of the Carlton Community Network (CCN). Our Director of Community, attends these meetings bi-monthly. Other agencies that make up the network include the Church of All Nations, Carlton Primary School, Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Drummond St Relationship Centre, YMCA (Carlton Baths), Fitzroy Financial Counselling Service, the City of Melbourne, City of Yarra North Health Service and Centrelink. These meetings play a vital role in mapping what is happening in the community, emerging issues/concerns, effective coordination of the services and support for agency staff. The then Minister for Education, Bronwyn Pike, launched the Opportunities for Carlton Project. The Rotary Club of Carlton has become a very visible and welcome member of the Carlton Community.

President 2024-25

President’s Message

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Carlton (RCC). The 40 years of continuous operation of Carlton Rotary, and the dedicated service of its members to the Carlton community is a massive achievement, which showcases ‘The magic of Rotary’.

As a president, this year I would like to do my best to support all our club members, so they can continue the good work they have been already doing, aligned with the motto ‘Caring for Carlton’. Going beyond this, I would like to deliver three key activities:

(1)      Introduce a new, volunteer to membership transformation model, to provide a robust pipeline of new club members;

(2)      Undertake a community needs assessment in Carlton, to strengthen the focus of our existing projects and inform us about new projects to be commenced; and

(3)      Bring back networking into our daily Rotary activities, by organising joint networking activities with members of our Rotary Community Group.

I appreciate the opportunity follow in the footsteps of 39 years of Club presidents, and contribute my share to our story.

Michael Lapiña

District Governor 2024/45

Governor of District 9800, operatic tenor Michael Lapiña began his professional career in 1988 performing in musicals, touring extensively in Australia and Asia, and being engaged with many of Australia’s leading opera houses to perform some of the most coveted tenor roles in the operatic repertoire.

His Rotary career began in 2005 joining the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne Sunrise, a breakfast Club that suited Michael’s corporate role as an Executive Coach & Project Director at the National Australia Bank that was situated across the road from where Rotary met.

Transferring his membership to the Rotary Club of Wyndham in 2018, he juggles his professional opera career with being a Music Tutor at the prestigious Haileybury College, as well as his Rotary commitments, which has seen him hold several District Leadership roles, including Assistant Governor, Team Leader of the Group Vocational Exchange, Artistic Director of several District Conferences, and Artistic Consultant for the Next Generation Service Exchange sending aspiring young Opera professionals to Bayreuth, Germany annually.  Recently, he has was invited to sing at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Rotary International Convention in Singapore.

Michael’s passion and success stems from the support of his wife, Niña, and his three adult children, Mikey, Alex and Brianna – all of whom are Rotarians.
